He has been called intense since he was a kid, back when people would say come on Tom, you're so intense, and his answer was always the same: I don't know what to say, I am intense. He keeps a good sense of humor about the whole thing. What drives it is simple enough. When something interests him, he wants to learn it, understand it, blast through the confusion and build up the ability. On a set, that shows up as a willingness to look foolish while acting, because that is not what any of it is about. The real work is finding the tone and the tools together, having an experience as a group. He works hard, and the people working alongside him know it. He expects a lot and he is upfront about it. The way he frames it is almost a challenge: the rumors are true, and do you want this? Trust me, the rumors are true, I'll be here before you, what experience do you want? That level of responsibility extends to everyone involved. None of it means he has anything against cable or TV or Netflix. He thinks those are great, they create jobs and everything. What cinema offers him is different: all of us coming together in a room and sharing an experience, which is about humanity.
