    Takaichi Putin Northern Territories

Putin's trip to the Northern Territories drew a blunt response from Japan's PM Takaichi, who called it UNACCEPTABLE. Tokyo regards those islands as Japanese territory, full stop. The visit reads as a deliberate provocation, and it will harden public opinion against Russia for years. Japan is being pressured from two directions. To the north, Russia is entrenching itself in the Kurils and conducting joint military flights and drills with China near Japanese airspace. To the south and east, China keeps escalating around the Senkakus, Taiwan, and deeper into the Pacific. The two are coordinating more closely, and that's the core challenge. Japan needs to move beyond rhetoric: more defense spending, better missiles, higher readiness, and explicit red lines. Soft talk won't deter either power. The U.S. remains the primary security partner through the treaty, but the wars in Ukraine and Iran could stretch American defense commitments to allies. Australia and India, through the Quad, offer real military capability and a stake in keeping the region open. Those are the partners that matter; capability outweighs talk. Takaichi's strong words were a good start, but Japan must back them up so neither China nor Russia assumes it can keep pushing for free. Mala tempora currunt...
