If there is an ALL TIME CLASSIC Japanese anime which strongly resonates with cinephiles in the west, it’s always been AKIRA. Its 3rd rerelease saw massive turnout at US BoxOffice, as the animation grossed SPECTACULAR 1.2M on FRI reissue Opening Day, despite playing over just 787 theatres. The re-release has outgrossed even A24’s brand new horror Onslaught’s 782k Opening Day, and the horror was available over 1.918 theatres. Among A24 and Akira, cinephiles had a clear winner. But the most outstanding is that in just 1 day, this reissue of Akira has already outgrossed the entire original run + rereleases of Akira combined in the U.S. - once again a testament of the growth of anime’s consumption in the U.S.
