US alcohol consumption lowest since 1939

🇺🇸 Only 54% of Americans now drink alcohol, the lowest level since 1939. This is the second year in a row that alcohol consumption has remained at this record-low level, according to Gallup. At the same time, awareness of the possible health effects of drinking has increased. About 86% of Americans say they have heard at least some information about recent research on the long-term health effects of alcohol consumption. As alcohol consumption has decreased overall, fewer Americans also report drinking more than they should. Only 13% now say they sometimes drink too much, the lowest percentage recorded. Before 2000, that number was regularly above 20%, reaching its highest point of 35% in 1989.
