Nicolás Otamendi on Messi's Argentina farewell

The narrative around Lionel Messi's final game for Argentina often fixates on the penalty that became his 126th goal, but Nicolás Otamendi insists the real story was how Leo treated the entire evening as just another night of playing rather than a farewell ceremony. Otamendi carried the private knowledge that this match marked his own last appearance for the national team, a fact he never shared with anyone because Leo already understood the gravity without needing words. The first half at Monumental was completely flat with no goals despite the stadium being full, while Otamendi watched Messi move through touches and passes like it was any other routine match. Then in the second half, Messi took a corner from the left side, Otamendi ran into the box, received the ball on his head, and struck it first time to make it 1-0. Immediately after the assist, Messi simply walked back without celebrating, acting as if he had executed that exact play a thousand times before. They substituted Otamendi off right after that sequence, ending his minutes on the pitch, while the man who set up the goal didn't give a speech or make a big deal of it; he just pointed the way he always does. From the bench, Otamendi watched the rest unfold as Messi found Nico Paz, who curled the shot home for 2-0. Even then, Messi celebrated like there was another goal coming rather than treating it as a goodbye. The third goal came from a penalty kick that went straight into the top corner, marking Messi's 126th goal for the national team. Everyone in the stadium knew what was happening, and when the bench stood up, Otamendi grabbed Messi and told him that was exactly how you leave the stage. Messi replied that he hit the post at the end and wished he could have scored one more. Otamendi reminded him that he contributed to all three goals, the corner for Otamendi, the pass to Paz, and the penalty itself, while playing the full 90 minutes against Benin without conceding. When Otamendi asked what else he wanted from a last night, Messi said he simply didn't want the match to feel like a goodbye. That performance wasn't defined by the penalty strike but by how Messi spent his final game setting up others while still looking annoyed that the post blocked a fourth goal. He didn't seem to be saying goodbye; he looked like he was still playing.
