So the cheating scene in Secret Window was shot under conditions nobody on camera signed up for. Maria Bello says David Koepp deliberately scared her and Timothy Hutton during that sequence in the 2004 film, and the method was a full sensory ambush. No call of action reached them. Nobody knew at what point he'd step through the door. Koepp had big speakers tucked away and the lighting wired to fire the instant that door moved. Fifteen to twenty minutes passed in pure black before the door flew open, the lights kicked on, and something loud tore out of the speakers. Bello called what followed real fear, the kind you have no way to fight. "It was so real and we got so freaked out. You couldn't help but react to that!" And Johnny Depp had his own contribution: he suggested walking up to where they lay and yelling, a move he framed as using voice as a weapon.
