Beginner's guide to Space: what should newcomers know first?

I remember feeling totally overwhelmed when I first started looking into space stuff, so I get the struggle. For me, the biggest thing was just getting a basic sense of scale and distance, like how far apart planets really are. What do you wish someone had told you when you were starting out?
