Heath Ledger's family confirmed he intended to return as the Joker, a claim co-star Aaron Eckhart supported. Christopher Nolan nearly used CGI and deleted footage from The Dark Knight to revive the character about a year before The Dark Knight Rises (2012) dropped, but he ruled that move out as disrespectful to Ledger's memory.
