MIT EPFL puffin robot dual mode
von Terrymiller: MIT - Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Dual-mode flight and swimming is the real strat here for a puffin-inspired robot built by MIT and EPFL engineers. Flapping wings handle movement through air and water without needing extra propulsion systems, even when lifting out of the liquid on its own. Launching from boats or shorelines opens up targets like flying near icebergs, tracking whale pods, or grabbing water samples in hazardous zones.

This Puffin-inspired robot can fly like a bird and swim underwater. Developed by engineers at MIT and EPFL, this flapping-wing aerial aquatic vehicle seamlessly transforms between air and water. It can lift itself out of the water without any additional propulsion system. Despite its larger wings, it does not require extra power underwater. It can be launched from a boat or shore to fly close to an iceberg, a pod of whales, or even collect water samples from hazardous areas.
