Derrick Broze on attention spans and The Pyramid of Power
Can you sit through one thing for five to ten seconds before the phone comes out? That's the window Derrick Broze (DBrozeLiveFree) sees in his six nieces and nephews, all 17 and under, all on TikTok. He built The Pyramid of Power with episodes mostly at 30 minutes or less, aiming for the Netflix generation, thinking bingeable was the move. Lately he's second-guessing it, wondering if half an hour is already past some people's limit. His answer isn't to shrink further. He won't join a race to the bottom, won't flatten a complicated world into a soundbite or a single sentence, even if that's the easier sell. The internet messing with all of us is the whole thread here

if you want to actually understand the world around you it is a bit more complex than people want people want though they just want the sound bite they want a one sentence explanation for everything and you know i maybe this is just a me being the old man yelling at the clouds but i'm like i don't want to give into that you know i don't want to give into the like dumbing down a society which is i think what it really feels like i look at my i have six nieces and nephews they're all 17 and under and they're on tick tock you know and i just watch them like just like they They can't sit still, look at one thing for more than five seconds or 10 seconds, right? So trying to get them, like when I was making The Pyramid of Power, I thought I was doing a good job by making, for the most part, every episode is 30 minutes or less. And I wanted it to be that way so that it's bingeable for the Netflix generation. You watch one episode, you might get pulled in. But now I'm like, shit, I should have made them two minutes long because apparently 30 minutes is too long for some people, you know? But I don't want to keep participating in this race to the bottom is what I kind of feel like. We talk about how the internet is messing with all of us all the time. So if you're into that kind of thing, definitely hit follow.
