Fifth Circuit ruling on ICE bond hearings
von Flint: United States Department of Homeland Security
Bond hearings aren't owed to anyone locked up on an immigration case, the full Fifth Circuit says, and it holds no matter how many months or years the detention drags on. The way the ruling lands, that's a win for ICE and a win for DHS. Here's the part people skip: mandatory detention became law back in 1996 when Congress passed it. Then it sat there getting ignored for decades, with undocumented immigrants cut loose into the country to show up for a court date later, and plenty of them never did. That's the run this decision ends #UnitedStatesDepartmentOfHomelandSecurity #Politics
