The self-titled debut album by the folk rock trio America arrived on November 12, 1971, through Warner Bros. Records in the United Kingdom. While the group consisted of Dewey Bunnell, Gerry Beckley, and Dan Peek, three Americans raised in London during their fathers' U.S. Air Force service, the record initially omitted the track that would define their career. The band's unique background blended American country sensibilities with British pop production techniques, a fusion refined at Morgan Studios and Trident Studios under the guidance of producer Ian Samwell.

Commercial fortunes shifted dramatically after the single "A Horse with No Name" topped the US Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks starting in March 1972. This success prompted the immediate addition of the hit song to the American version of the album, which had previously featured only the original UK tracklist. The revised release climbed to number one on the Billboard 200 in April 1972 and eventually earned multi-platinum certification from the RIAA.

Musically, the album stands as a definitive document of early 1970s soft rock, characterized by acoustic instrumentation and lush three-part vocal harmonies. The title track utilizes a distinctive open guitar tuning and a repetitive chord progression to evoke a dreamlike desert atmosphere. Despite initial radio bans stemming from misconceptions about drug references in the lyrics, the song became an enduring classic, with the album itself remaining a staple of classic rock radio playlists for decades.
