Kafka Hibino spends his days cleaning up the remains of giant monsters in a Japan perpetually under siege. At thirty-two, he works for Kaiju Cleanup Inc., a job that feels far removed from his childhood dream of joining the elite Japan Defense Force alongside his best friend Mina Ashiro. That routine shatters when a small parasitic creature enters his body through his mouth while he disposes of a corpse. The parasite merges with him, granting the ability to transform into a powerful humanoid monster designated "Kaiju No. 8".

Now Kafka must navigate a dangerous double life. He conceals his transformation from the Defense Force while striving to pass their grueling entrance exam to fulfill his promise to Mina, who has risen to the rank of Captain. The narrative follows his journey as he joins the Third Division, battling other kaiju while managing the physical and psychological toll of his dual nature. The story explores the tension between human morality and monstrous instincts, all while uncovering the origins of the parasites and conspiracies within the Defense Force.

Written and illustrated by Naoya Matsumoto, the series began serialization on Shueisha's Shonen Jump+ platform on July 3, 2020. It blends visceral action inspired by tokusatsu franchises like Ultraman and Godzilla with character-driven storytelling typical of modern shonen manga. Critics have praised the fluid fight choreography and grotesque yet creative kaiju designs. The work stands out for its unique premise where the protagonist becomes the monster rather than just fighting one.
