Goyard stands apart in the luxury sector by refusing to sell online or run advertisements. The company operates fewer than 20 boutiques worldwide, maintaining a physical presence in cities like Paris, London, New York, Tokyo, and Dubai. This scarcity strategy creates an aura of exclusivity that drives demand without traditional marketing spend.
Customers seeking the brand's signature chevron-patterned canvas must visit these stores in person. The Paris location at 233 Rue Saint-Honoré serves as the historic headquarters where artisans hand-paint every bag. While competitors rush to expand digital channels, Goyard relies on word-of-mouth and its long-standing reputation among royalty and celebrities to sustain its business model.
The brand recently gained attention for launching a $49,000 dog house covered in its signature material. This product highlights the company's willingness to explore niche luxury items while keeping its core identity rooted in traditional trunk-making and leather goods craftsmanship.
Mission
Geschichte
The story begins in 1792 when Maison Morel opened in Paris to pack crates for wealthy clients. François Goyard joined this firm as an apprentice in 1845. His father worked as a barge operator on the Yonne River, and those childhood memories of water ripples and floating logs later inspired the brand's iconic chevron design.
When owner Pierre-François Martin died without heirs in 1853, François inherited the business and renamed it Maison Goyard. His son Edmond took over in 1885 and secured contracts with the Russian Imperial Court and the British Royal Family. Robert Goyard led the company after his father's death in 1937 until Jean-Michel Signoles purchased the firm in 1998.
Signoles expanded the boutique network into Asia and the United States during the 2000s. He introduced new products like the Saint Louis tote which became a cult favorite. Despite modernizing operations, the company maintained its policy against advertising and e-commerce sales.
