Love on the Brain

Rihanna's Anti album found its most enduring soulful moment in "Love on the Brain," a track that deliberately channels the aesthetics of 1950s and 1960s doo-wop. Released as the fourth single on September 27, 2016, through Westbury Road and Roc Nation, the song was crafted by Rihanna alongside Fred Ball and Joseph Angel. The production relies on prominent guitar arpeggios, organ chords, and syncopated strings to create a vintage atmosphere that contrasts with modern pop structures.

The lyrics depict the exhausting cycle of a toxic relationship where affection feels like an uncontrollable force. Despite the heavy subject matter, the record achieved significant commercial traction, reaching number five on the US Billboard Hot 100. This peak marked Rihanna's 22nd top-five hit, breaking her tie with Elvis Presley for the fifth-most top-five singles in chart history. It also became her 30th top-ten single, matching Madonna and The Beatles for that specific milestone.

Certifications followed quickly, with the Recording Industry Association of America awarding the track Diamond status for exceeding 10 million units in sales and streaming equivalents. Similar high-level recognition arrived from France and Poland, while platinum awards came from the UK, Canada, and Australia. Critics praised the vocal performance and the successful revival of classic sounds, noting its subtle influence on the pop landscape in 2017. [bearbeiten]
