Verona burns with a feud that has spilled blood in the streets for generations. When Romeo Montague slips into a Capulet masquerade ball, he spots Juliet across the room and forgets his earlier crush on Rosaline instantly. They speak only a few lines before their lips meet, sealing a vow that defies the hatred surrounding them. Friar Laurence agrees to marry them in secret, betting that their union might finally stop the fighting.
The fragile peace shatters within hours when Tybalt kills Mercutio and Romeo retaliates by slaying his cousin. The Prince banishes Romeo from Verona, sending him to Mantua before the couple can share a wedding night. Juliet faces a forced marriage to Count Paris and turns to the friar for help. He gives her a potion that mimics death for forty-two hours, planning to wake her in the family tomb where Romeo will rescue her.
A plague quarantine stops the messenger from delivering the friar's letter to Romeo. Hearing only that Juliet is dead, he buys poison and rushes to her crypt. He finds Paris there and kills him in a duel, then drinks the poison beside Juliet's body. She wakes moments later, sees her lover dead, and stabs herself with his dagger. The discovery of the bodies forces the Montagues and Capulets to end their war, though the cost is the lives of their children.
