Über dieses Album
Michael Jackson penned Stranger in Moscow during a September 1993 layover in the Russian capital while on his Dangerous World Tour. The song emerged from a hotel room where the singer felt isolated despite crowds gathering outside, a sentiment he described as a strange and eerie period of loneliness. He recorded the track in January 1994 at New York's Hit Factory and Sony Music Studios, crafting a sparse arrangement that matched the somber mood of the lyrics.
The single arrived globally between late 1996 and mid-1997 through Epic Records. While it secured top ten positions across nations like Germany, Austria, and Finland, its reception in the United States remained muted. Radio play was scarce there, causing the track to miss the Billboard Hot 100 top forty entirely. In contrast, the UK Singles Chart placed it at number thirteen, reflecting stronger international support for the release.
Michel Gondry directed the black-and-white music video, which depicts Jackson walking slowly through a rainy city before being caught in a thunderstorm. This visual metaphor reinforced the themes of isolation found in the recording. Later covers by artists such as Tame Impala and Carlos Santana introduced the composition to new audiences, though the original version remains a defining moment of introspection in Jackson's later career.
