Released on June 12, 2001, by MCA Records, Take Off Your Pants and Jacket marked the fourth studio effort from the San Diego trio. The record arrived just months after their massive breakthrough with Enema of the State, carrying the weight of expectations while the band members wrestled with creative burnout. Recorded between December 2000 and March 2001 across three locations including Signature Sound in San Diego and Cello Studios in Hollywood, the sessions were guided by producer Jerry Finn. This collaboration brought a polished sheen to the group's signature sound without sacrificing the raw energy that defined their earlier work.
The album title itself is a crude pun on male masturbation, setting the stage for lyrics that oscillate between juvenile pranks and genuine emotional vulnerability. Tom DeLonge, Mark Hoppus, and Travis Barker delivered thirteen tracks in under forty minutes, balancing high-octane punk anthems with surprisingly tender moments. Singles like "The Rock Show" and "First Date" emerged from a specific request by a record executive for radio-friendly material, yet they became staples on modern rock playlists. Meanwhile, "Stay Together for the Kids" offered a stark contrast, addressing Hoppus's parents' divorce with a maturity that hinted at the band's future direction.
Commercially, the release shattered records for the genre. It debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, moving over 350,000 copies in its first week and becoming the first punk rock album to top the chart in the United States. By May 2002, the RIAA had certified it double platinum, a milestone followed by similar recognition in the UK and Canada. To support the campaign, Blink-182 co-headlined the Pop Disaster Tour alongside Green Day, solidifying their status as arena-filling acts. While initial reviews were mixed regarding the lyrical content, retrospective analysis now credits the album with influencing the early 2000s pop-punk explosion.
